The Truth About Smoking and Belly Fat

This may come as quite a shocker to all of those people out there that believe smoking is helping them get thin, and think that if they stop smoking they are going to get fat. Smoking actually makes you fat! Yes you have read that correctly and science backs that up, smoking increases belly fat.

The toxins in the cigarettes that destroy your health also cause belly fat and raise blood sugar levels because they stimulate the natural stress response in your body. It is important that you also know that if you have children and you smoke, exposing them to second hand smoke increases their chances of being overweight and increases their belly fat.

The belly fat that smoking causes is known as smoker's belly. You may not have heard of it but researchers have. There have been numerous studies done on a repeated basis that explain why whether you are on the thin side or, the fat side you have that protruding belly.

Typically smokers weigh less then nonsmokers, this feeds the misconception that smoking makes them thin. However, even though smokers weigh less than the people who don't smoke, those smokers also have more belly fat than nonsmokers. The more cigarettes that a person smokes, the more belly fat that they are likely going to gain in the near future, making smoking an even riskier habit than they once thought. In the studies that were done they measured smokers, people who used to smoke, and people who never have smoked and found that the smokers were the ones' with the biggest waist measurements and smaller hip measurements.

The conclusion that can be drawn from these studies show that if you start smoking and have no belly fat, the smoking will lead to more belly fat. If you already have some belly fat and you smoke, you are not only going to increase the amount of belly fat you have but you are going to loose the much needed lean muscle.

While the studies can not conclusively say why smokers have more belly fat, it is believed that it is caused by the harmful toxins in the cigarettes and the fact that smoking effects a person's sense of smell and taste. So when smokers eat, they are eating food that is higher in saturated fat than nonsmokers. There isn't a medical professional in the world that isn't going to tell you that you need to stop smoking to protect your health, and to decrease your likelihood of developing health conditions that could lead to your death. Stop smoking to get rid of the belly fat.
